Into the Woods
April 5, 6, and 7, 2018 at 7:30pm April 7 at 1pm (Family Show) Earl D. Prout Auditorium at SHS Letter from the Director... Hello and thank you for coming to tonight’s performance of Into the Woods! Our students have been hard at work on this year’s show. Auditions were in mid-October and the cast list went up later that month. This way each student could begin learning his/her own part before we started meeting as a group in January. Once in the new year, we hit the ground running. I was first introduced to this show as a new teacher when I started my career at Prairie Heights High School in 2013. I was the Music Director and Pit Orchestra Conductor for the production. I quickly grew to love the show and knew I’d revisit it someday. It has been an absolute pleasure getting to work with this great show again! This musical is a fusion of many of the Brothers Grimm fairytale stories. As you can imagine, this makes for a quickly-paced and interesting journey. Tonight, we will see many favorite characters like Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk. We will also meet some new, yet loveable characters like: The Baker, Baker’s Wife, and the two Princes. With all of these coming together, the production will keep the audience engaged. The music is composed by Stephen Sondheim who is also known for Sweeny Todd and West Side Story. Into the Woods is regarded as one of the most musically- and vocally-challenging musicals ever written. The accompanying parts often do not help the singers and vice versa. The extreme ranges for the singers (both high and low), the deep characterization requirements, and the challenging blocking caused by the elaborate set design are just a few things that contribute to the complexity and difficulty of this show in particular. However, these students have risen to the occasion. With their incredible talents and steadfast efforts, they are able to produce the stunning final product you are about to see. It has been incredible working with these students. They are all immensely talented and are seasoned veterans to the stage. They met and exceeded the challenge of this show with a poise and a professionalism seldom seen in high school students. On behalf of our students and everyone in the music department at Seymour High School, we hope you enjoy the show! Thank you! Kyle R. Karum |

Working: The Musical
March 31, April 1, and April 2, 2016 Press Release on February 11, 2016 The SHS Show Choir is “working” hard on the upcoming spring musical. Auditions were in late October and the cast list went up early November. This way each student could begin preparing his/her own part before they started meeting as a group in January. Once in the new year, they hit the ground running by first rehearsing as a large ensemble and then moving to the small, solo numbers. At this point, they are perfecting the songs and will begin to add choreography very soon. The show itself is titled “Working.” It is a vignette-style musical which means there is no underlying plot or storyline. Instead, each scene is a separate idea. In this case, each scene is a different career or profession. This will keep the show moving and keep the audience engaged. These careers include: cleaning women, teachers, truck drivers, firemen, ironworkers, stone masons, secretaries, and many more. Even though there is no plotline, the scenes transition well and are all connected. The musical is composed by Stephen Schwartz (composer of “Wicked” and “Godspell”) and James Taylor among many others. It spans a great deal of music genres like: folk, jazz, rock and roll, and 1970’s singer/songwriter. Each scene certainly has its own unique style which will keep things fresh for performers and audience alike. The performances are March 31, April 1, and April 2. All performance are at 7:30pm in the Earl D. Prout Auditorium. Tickets are $6.00 each. The SHS Show Choir is very excited for the show and cannot wait to see you there! |
